Later in the year our under 21 team made real headway in the championship by reaching the County Semi-final but were unlucky to be beaten byTullamore. Our under 14's also reached the County Final in 1986 only to lose out to Shannonbridge, while also that year our Under 21's lost the County Semi-final to Ferbane. Unfortunately the silverware in the early days was few and far between. 1983 saw Colmcille Gaels reach their second Minor Final in the space of twelve months, but Doon proved to be too good for us on the day.

On form so far this year the gap between the two clubs appears to have narrowed significantly, but logic still dictates that Shamrocks should have little difficulty in Geashill. Edenderry have turned the corner after a grim spell this decade and are an up and coming team, but it would be understandable if a sense of dj-vu was settling into the club as they once again get drawn into a relegation battle. Both these teams contested county finals in 2007, one at intermediate and one at senior. Shamrocks need a big margin win here as well as a decisive result in Tullamore in order to advance to the quarter-finals and the suspicion is that they"ll hold up their end of the deal. Shamrocks to win by at least six points is the most likely outcome.

Both these sides have been surprise packets in 2008 and neither team will want to lose momentum by doing anything other than competing at 100 per cent intensity. Conspiracy theorists will be watching this game keenly to see if the two sides engineer the mutually satisfactory draw that will send both clubs into the knockout stages, but realistically this will only be an issue if the scores are level with a few minutes to go.

In order to reach a Quarter-Final, Tullamore must win this game by four points and hope that Rhode beat Ferbane in the other match going on simultaneously in O"Connor Park. Tullamore found James Grennan too much to handle at midfield last time out and it"s easy to see how John Ryan and John Egan could prove similarly difficult to get the better of this week. That Tullamore have the players to do this is not in question - whether they have the resolve to take on and beat a fired up Shannonbridge team is quite another matter altogether. As Sesame Street could have put it, this match is brought to you by the letters Q and F, and the number 4.

Ballyfore are still struggling to deal with the loss of Conor Evans, but if they can retain their belief and their focus, they have enough ability to sneak a tight game here. Ballyfore come into this game on the back of two defeats, but any kind of win here combined with a heavy defeat for Kilclonfert against Walsh Island would see the Edenderry parish club advance to the knockout stages. Tullamore too have been quite competitive at this level and their narrow win over Kilclonfert back in May gives them the whip hand, though their most recent performance was very discouraging.

Unfortunately 2005 also saw us defeated by Birr in the U12 County semi-final and since then matters on the playing field hasn't brought us too much silverware. Silverware was back in Tubber once again. In 2006 we did reach the Minor Quarter Final only to lose out to Kilcormac/Killoughey who that year reached the County Final, while it was in 2006 that we made our last final appearance when we lost to St Broughan's in the U16B Final. To those who had the vision of a Minor Club, our years of success are down to you and hopefully more and more years of success will come to us. 2005 was another great year for the club when we beat Birr by 1-12 to 2-3 in the U14B Final and Ferbane in the U16B Final by 1-9 to 1-7.

Gracefield should welcome back the two Fitzpatricks and that added firepower could give them the edge in what could be a very hard fought and entertaining game. Offaly"s two midfielders, Ciaran McManus and Niall Smith, will do battle at midfield and both players are likely to play a big role, but Gracefield"s half-back and half-forward lines should win the battle for breaking ball and their greater scoring ability should be too much for Tubber to handle, as a club who find scoring more than twelve times extremely difficult.
