Stradbally – Clashmore Match Prediction | 14-09-2019 15:00

Very few times possession was given away from this option as the passing was pinpoint from both teams. Even in the final 15 minutes (Clashmore/Kinsalebeg hit their last score on 44 minutes to go 2-8 to 0-10 points up) the quality of the game didnt drop as Clashmore/Kinsalebeg circled the wagons. With football getting so much bad press nationally, it was great to see the game being played at such a high speed and directness. Aiden Trihy and Sen Bourke showed great appetite for the challenge in the closing stages. They rushed out of their packed back-line to meet them head on and broke out of defence on the counter-attack at pace. Long kick-passing dominated the game for 45 minutes with both sides playing orthodox and attacking quickly. 7. Although their half-forward line and midfield retreated into defence they didnt wait for Nire to walk in on them.

Following an unsuccessful period, the club was re-founded in 1959 by Joseph O'Keeffe and others. Clashmore won what was called the Primary Championship in 1962 by beating Portlaw by 1-10 to 0-4. Success came in 1969 when Clashmore-Kinsalebeg won a double by winning the Waterford Intermediate Football Championship title against Dunhill by 3-6 to 2-4, and a Waterford Junior Hurling Championship title when beating Kilgobinet by 3-4 to 3-2. The Kinsalebeg club had again been playing as a separate entity for some years previous, but in 1967 both clubs combined once again.

Cillian O'Keeffe, Kieran Connery and Sean Fleming are current members of the Waterford Senior Football Squad. Seamus Landers also played football for Cork. Brian O'Halloran is currently[when?] a member of the Waterford Senior Hurling squad. Despite being a very small club, Clashmore-Kinsalebeg have a good tradition of supplying players to the county team. Other recent players of note include Karl O'Keeffe and Jason Seward and Stephen Barron.

After a slow beginning which left Nire looking like they were going to be easy winners, the Clashmore defence came to grips with their opposition and very well worked goals from Jason Seward and Cillian O Keeffe in the 21st and in the 24th minutes gave them the confidence to drive on and take the game to their more fancied opponents.

Both players needed assistance. de Brca was able to play on. You could hear the thump as the two collided chasing a loose ball. 4. Shane Walsh retired from the game though injury after a thundering collision with Tadhg de Brca on 36 minutes. Bizarrely, once play resumed Nire played for 14 men while they waited five minutes to make a substitution, Alan Lawlor.

The Round Tower side worked a great team goal at the start of the second half that Clinton Hennessey dispatched to net. The Ardmore vs De La Salle game was an error strewn encounter. Both teams were slow to settle and both defences in particular were guilty of poor handling, passing possession to the opposition or missing interceptions. Meanwhile, De La Salles goal came when Sean Barron rushed his line out toward the 14 but failed to get to a high ball ahead of Lee Hayes who fisted to an unguarded net. Two of those chances came from De La Salle errors after short kick-outs while one long range effort nearly bounced over goalkeeper David Dennisons head and in under the crossbar. Both goalkeepers had shaky moments as well when it came to judging restartswith De La Salle in particular gifting Ardmore the ball from short kick-outs. In the end, Ardmore settled into the contest after the break and looked the better team during the final 30 minutes. In fact, they had five goal chances in total during the game, Hennesseys the only one they converted.

The Nire challenge reignited and they finished the hour as they started it while Clashmore didnt score in the last 21 minutes of play. Nire were guilty of some bad wides during this period but the score they needed to revitalise their challenge eventually came from a Shane Ryan free in the 53rd minute and realistically, there was just now one kick of the size 5 between the teams .

Questions were being asked of Clashmores intentions and they answered in style, coming to grips with the pace of the game and Edmond O Halloran heralded their comeback with a fine score from play before Cillian O Keeffe provided for a rasper of a goal by Jason Seward into the roof of the town end goal in the 21st minute, 0-9 to 1-4.

The Clashmore half of the club came to prevalence after the turn of the century, when as a separate club they won five Waterford county football titles between 1903 and 1907, while also contesting many Munster Championship matches during that period. Kinsalebeg was among the first clubs in the country, established in 1885, the year after the GAA was formed, and went on to contest the first football final, losing to Ballysaggart. Then, in 1925 both halves of the parish combined to beat Rinn gCuanach by 0-2 to 0-1 in what would be their last County Senior win. County success did not come again until 1920, when Clashmore beat Rathgormack by 0-4 to 0-3, before losing to Geraldines in the 1922 final by 2-0 to 0-1. They went on to win the Senior football championship in 1886 and 1891.

Hopefully, tonights game has set the tone for what is to come. That , combined with not taking one of their four goal chances, was a costly factor in the losing of the game. All in all, it was a great start to the championship. They played with great heart. 10.The wide county was respectable for both teams. Their defending in the second half was top quality as they shut down a threatening forward line containing Conor Gleeson, Shane Ryan and Darren Guiry. Up front for them Brian OHalloran and Paul OConnor were menacing with punishing speed and acceleration and close ball control. However, Nire experienced two scoring droughts. One of 12 minutes (the 19th until the 31st) and then another of 22 minutes (the 31st until the 53rd). Clashmore/Kinsalebeg six. However, Clashmore/Kinsalebeg were full value for their win. Nire had a total ofeight wides.

Nire will be disappointed to lose their winning sequence in the Waterford championship and they will recover but, like all dual clubs, they will have to manage the involvement at Senior level in both. The big task for Clashmore after this noticeable success is to bring consistency into their performances and if they can achieve this, they will be around when the real business end of the championship commences.
